MEDIA SPONSOR EVENT: WBEZ is a proud media sponsor of the Segundo Ruiz Belvis Cultural Center. On Friday, September 21, Grammy-nominated saxophonist and composer Miguel Zenón will celebrate the release of his 11th recording as a leader, Yo Soy la Tradición, with a benefit concert for Puerto Rican hurricane relief on Friday, September 21 at the Segundo Ruiz Belvis Cultural Center in Chicago.
Joining him will be the acclaimed Chicago-based Spektral Quartet. Zenón and the quartet will perform Yo Soy la Tradición, a concert-length work commissioned by the David and Reva Logan Center for the Arts and the Hyde Park Jazz Festival. The ambitious suite of eight chamber works filters the rich cultural-folkloric traditions of Zenón's native Puerto Rico through a decidedly modernist lens.
About The Chicago Hurricane Aid for Puerto Rican Arts
The Chicago Hurricane Aid for Puerto Rican Arts is a special fund created by Segundo Ruiz Belvis Cultural Center to support professional artists affected by Hurricanes Irma and María. The initiative provides assistance through the following efforts:
Providing direct support to local productions and professional independent artists that have suffered losses impacting their capacity to stay and make a living in Puerto Rico.
Offering opportunities to professional Puerto Rican artists from the island to tour and present their work in Chicago, in collaboration with artists from the diaspora.
