About the Chicago Public Media Internship Program
Chicago Public Media offers internships at our location in downtown Chicago. Internship terms are available four times a year. Interns have an opportunity to learn about various aspects of Chicago Public Media while gaining hands-on experience in their chosen area of focus.
Interns learn a variety of skills including:
- writing for newscasts
- researching story ideas
- digital audio editing
- interviewing
- working with sound
- field reporting
- producing feature segments
- studio operation
Internships are also available in other areas, including membership and marketing. As part of the learning experience, interns attend workshops in the above listed skills lead by senior staff members.
Eligibility:
Our program is open to college students, recent graduates, non-traditional students, and members of the community. Members of minority groups are encouraged to apply.
To participate in our internship program, intern candidates must be available for a minimum of 15-hours per week during daytime business hours. The only exception is our Eight Forty-Eight and News Desk internships which require a 35-hour per week commitment.
General Information:
- internships are intended as a learning experience and a supplement to formal education
- college students should inquire at their schools' career services or internship departments about receiving credit for participating in our internship program
- all internships are unpaid positions; an intern should understand in advance that he/she will not be entitled to wages, nor do we provide housing location assistance for out-of-state applicants
- an intern is not an employee, and therefore is not covered by the station's employee benefit plans or worker's compensation insurance
- internships last for three months, with an option to renew for three additional months (for a total of 6 months) if both Chicago Public Media and the intern agree
- Chicago Public Media reserves the right to terminate any internship at any time for any cause
- due to the amount of applications we receive, we are only able to contact candidates who are finalists for internships
