Marketing and Events
The Marketing and Events Intern will gain exposure to the various marketing and events that promote WBEZ and Vocalo.org in the Chicago area. This internship will provide experience in a range of skills including; creating on-site experiences at events, social media marketing, being involved in initiatives that deepen our engagement with existing listeners. Occasional evening and weekend hours may be required for this internship.
This American Life
The internship program focuses on every facet of producing the show—from copyediting to technical production to administrative duties. The interns start off observing the weekly production of the show by sitting in on meetings and edits with producers while developing basic production skills. Interns transcribe tape, learn to structure and mix a radio story, and perform assorted menial administrative tasks that are true signs of an internship. By the end of the program, interns are encouraged to produce their own pieces, including editing and mixing voice, sound and music. The show offers two six-month internships per year, starting in January and July and is based in New York City. Application instructions can be found here.
Sound Opinions
Sound Opinions interns are involved in all facets of producing the one hour weekly music talk show. The goal is to provide interns with a hands-on experience on a weekly radio program, helping them cultivate skills for a job in the broadcast field and/or music journalism.
Responsibilities will include: assisting in the conception and development of program segments, researching information, digitally editing segments and on-air promos, assisting the producers, hosts and guests during tapings, assisting in the maintenance of the show’s archive, and assisting in the broadcast and podcast of the program. Interns will also have the opportunity to work on the show’s website and live events.
Interns must be available to commit to either a Monday, Wednesday, Thursday or Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday schedule during regular office hours. With the occasional weekday evenings for tapings and special events.
Studio Production
Gain experience in one of the premier audio recording studios in Chicago. Observe and assist with set up, micing, recording and mixing of local, national and international musical artists. Assist with engineering interviews for various shows, and learn how to mix complex recording sessions with ProTools. Potential interns should have a basic knowledge of studio technology or have had taken classes in audio engineering.
Website/Blog (Content)
This internship works with web team on WBEZ.org and blogs.vocalo.org where they learn how to produce content for our news site and the blog. Interns learn how to write for the web, including copy, headlines and search optimized keywords. Interns will also have the opportunity to shoot and edit audio and video and post content to our social media sites.
Worldview
The Worldview internship provides experience on a daily show featuring in depth interviews. Worldview interns will pitch story ideas, research segments, learn to write scripts, book guests, and edit segments. The Worldview intern will also post show related content to the website. As Worldview interns progress in their internship, they work with the show producers to design and become involved in producing an in-depth series exploring issues that fit their interests. For example, past interns have produced week-long series on issues such as political Islam or alternative energy.
Wait Wait..Don’t Tell Me
Offers three internships a year – one in the summer, one in the fall and one in the winter. The intern researches the guest for the "Not My Job" segment, screens and answers calls coming in on the Wait Wait listener line, helps out with the live shows, and is responsible for recording, editing and sending out Carl Kasell’s famous answering machine messages. Experience with audio editing is a plus, and strong researching skills and a sense of humor are essential. To be considered, follow the instructions here.
Vocalo.org
Production interns will learn how to record, edit and mix and get to work in the studio with the on-air hosts. They will edit air-checks, help select listener-generated content for on air broadcast, act as a live correspondent in the field for on-air shifts, and edit raw audio/video collected from our communities.
